Summer School in Event History & Survival Analysis
(June 22-26, 2009,
taught by Prof. Paul D. Allison organized by Dipartimento di Scienze Aziendali
School objectives
This is an applications-oriented course on statistical methods for the analysis of longitudinal data on the occurrence of events, such as births, deaths, marriages, divorces, arrests, promotions, residential moves, innovations, bankruptcies, revolutions, etc. The focus will be on regression models in which the risk of event occurrence is a function of a set of explanatory variables. Topics will include life tables, Kaplan-Meier estimation, accelerated failure-time models, hazard models, censoring, maximum likelihood estimation, Cox regression models, partial likelihood, time-dependent covariates, competing risks, repeated events, unobserved heterogeneity, discrete-time methods.
In addition to the lectures, participants will spend about 1.5 hours each day doing supervised assignments with data provided by the instructor. There will be computers on site for hands-on assignments and practice. All examples and exercises will be done with the Stata package. The following Stata commands will be covered: ltable, stset, sts list, sts graph, sts test, streg, stcox, stcurve and cloglog. For those who prefer SAS, lectures notes using that package are available to participants. Download the full program here.

Prerequisites
This course is designed for participants who have had the equivalent of at least two courses in statistics: an introductory course and a course on linear regression. Some familiarity with logistic regression is helpful but not essential.
The venue
The 5 day course will be hosted by the The University Centre of Bertinoro, a stunning medieval fortress located on the hills of
The schedule
Here is a typical day's schedule:
09:30am-11:30am Lecture
11:30am-13:00am Supervised computing
13:00am-13:30pm Lunch break
13:30pm-16:00pm Lecture
16:30pm-17:00pm Computing and consulting
Participants will receive a 100-page manual containing detailed lecture notes (with equations and graphics, examples of computer printout etc.). This document frees participants from the distracting task of note taking. Note that you will have to bring your own laptop and make sure that STATA is installed on it (please let us know in advance if you don’t have STATA).
Registration fees and application
Participation is open to doctoral and post-doctoral students as well as faculty. Deadline for applications is June, 1 2009.
